Pyramid Peak Trail - 6.2 Miles Round-Trip
Pyramid Mountain (3,010') is located 3.1 miles from Pyramid Peak Trailhead on the north shore of Lake Crescent in Olympic National Park. Pyramid Mountain is distinguished by its namesake shape and prominence over the lake, which can be seen from many points along the 12 mile shore.
A lookout cabin was built on Pyramid Mountain in 1942 to spot enemy aircraft coming in from the Pacific Ocean during WWII. It's now on the National Register of Historic Places (listed 7.13.07):
The Pyramid Peak Trailhead is located within the North Shore Picnic Area on Camp David Jr. Road, about 25 miles from Port Angeles. The Pyramid Peak Trail crosses the Olympic Discovery Trail and heads northeast on a steady climb over Lake Crescent. Views are initially obstructed by a dense mix of cedar, Douglas fir, red alder and Pacific madrone.
It gains nearly 1000' on the first 1.5 miles up to June Creek (1.5 miles : 1,615'), just past which a major landslide recently occurred (1.6 mile mark).
NOTE: Contact the Park for current conditions across the landslide (360.565.3100). This point may not be passable due to general instability, weather, or during reconstruction. Most sources will mark this point as impassable - and for safety reasons, it should be avoided.
The trail continues east past the landslide to switchbacks up and over to the north side of the ridge (2.0 miles: 2,100'). The trail enters a cool cedar-fir forest with views that extend across the Strait of Juan de Fuca to Vancouver Island and Mount Baker.
It rises steadily in a quiet old growth forest (2.5 miles : 2,640) to the summit of Pyramid Mountain (3.1 miles: 3,010'). The summit is comprised of rugged outcrops, which may restrict movement but still offer terrific views over the Lake Crescent basin.
